3-day old Speckled Sussex chicks. These little puff balls are the youngest in the brooder at the moment.
Red Pullets (we're not sure of breed, they could be Rhode Island Reds, Red Sex Links, or Red Stars) they are 1 week old in this picture.
The 3 larger brown chicks clustered around the magazine are Brown Leghorns, we believe we have 2 pullets and a cockerel. We'll see as they get older. They are currently 1 week old. These will lay large white eggs.
The Silver Seabright Trio. The 5 year old DGD named these, as they are "Miss sized" Silver Seabrights are bantams, so these are fully grown at a mere 2lbs each! The rooster is named Dinner, the 2 hens are each named Chica and Flower. Silver Seabrights are show birds, and prized for their unique coloring. We are currently getting one lovely tiny egg every other day. We believe only one of our hens is contributing to the effort. Thanks to the almost 2 year old, we know that Dinner is doing his job, and these are fertilized eggs. Now to contemplate an incubator.
Still on order are 3 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (which will be 3 weeks old when they arrive, so the same age as the Barred Rocks), 3 Marans and 3 Buff Orpingtons. We will pick them up on Friday the 9th. On the 15th, 3 Ameracaunas and 3 Easter Eggers will arrive. And then we just await a call on the 3 Wellsummers and 3 Delawares. The total has now become 36. Chicken math is hard at work, since we began wanting 8-12.
